One of my favorite passages in the Bible is found in Psalm 8: O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! How cool is that?
It is hard to grasp how much Christ cares for each one of us as human beings. It is a little easier to imagine how much he cares for mankind or his disciples as a whole (just look at the tremendous sacrifice he made); however, I find it difficult to grasp how much he cares for me.
In today's passage (Luke 7:11-17), Jesus's love and compassion become crystal clear. A widow woman had lost her only son, the only person on whom she could depend. She now would be destitute and with little hope for any type of future. When Christ saw the widow, He knew her situation and He knew the pain that she was feeling. Verse 13 says that when the Lord saw the widow of Nain, He felt compassion for her. He felt compassion! The second sentence in James 5:11 tells us that the Lord is full of mercy and compassion. Is it not awesome to know that our Christ relates to each of us and to all of our needs. He relates to the spiritual, the physical, and the emotional.
I find it amazing to think that our Lord can care about each one of us and feel sorrow when we are hurting. Christ's mission was so important and there was so little time. Yet the Lord expressed a tenderness when He gave her son back to her. Can you imagine the scene, can you hear what must have been being said, and can you feel the emotion that Jesus, the widow, her son, and those that witnessed the miracle were experiencing.
It is so exciting to follow our Lord!
